A pewter basin, is one of 91 such bowls that have been recovered from the wreck of the London-based slave ship Henrietta Marie, sunk near Key West, Florida in 1700. The basins were part of a larger cargo of trade-goods carried onboard the ship, intended to be bartered for people along the West African Coast. Historical documents show that, in 1699, it took somewhere between 12 and 20 basins like this one to buy a person.
